Remarkable Creatures

“Chevalier's novel is called Remarkable Creatures. At its center is a pioneering 19th century fossil hunter named Mary Anning, whom Chevalier first encountered one day while visiting a small museum about dinosaurs.”

This was a pretty terrific book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Not only is it the story of finding ancient remains, it is a story of a deep friendship between two women living in England in the 1800s. The challenges they met and the courage it took to prove to the learned people of the time what they had seen and done was enlightening.

This was the book that was suggested to me as part of our book club. It was a book that I probably would not have picked up otherwise. Even though I knew of the author,Tracey Chevalier, who had written The Girl with a Pearl Earring, I didn’t feel inclined to read this book when it first came out. One of the treasures of being in book clubs is that sometimes we read outside our comfort song and that is a very good thing.
