It took me quite a few tries to get past the first 50 pages of this book, but I am so glad that I persevered.  This is a multi generational story set in Japan and Korea.  The time period is the second decade of the twentieth century and it progresses into the 1980’s.  The story travels briefly to America.

Our main characters are many and memorable.  Sunja meets Hansu who becomes a constant in her life, though not a husband.  We have Noa, Isak, Misouzu, Hana, and many others with names too hard to spell!!!!  Their struggles, loves, tragedies make this story incredibly memorable.

Pachinko, unknown to me, is a game of sorts, a combination of pinball  and slot machines…..a national obsession in Japan.  Pachinko parlors were not always respectable places.  Owners of these places could make a lot, a lot, of money.

This story is a MUST read!
