Clock Dance

We first meet Willa as a young girl, whose mother just disappeared.  She and her sister, Elaine, are brought up by her father.  We follow Willa as she lives a proper life, marries, windows, two sons, remarries and ends up living a retired life in Arizona with her second husband, Peter.  Through a series of events, we find Willa going to Baltimore to help Denise who was Sean’s  girlfriend.  Denise has been shot and has an injured leg.  Willa feel “needed” here.  In the first half of this novel, we see Willa following all the rules and doing what is expected of her.  The second half shows Willa finding herself and learning what she is trulhy capable of.  Some reviewers felt that the book ended abruptly and I did too, at first.  After thinking about the novel, I realize that the book ended just as it should.  Ann Tyler is a terrific author.  Her characters are lifelike and many times, I felt like I could have said many of the same things that Willa said.
