Carnegie’s Maid

This historical romance was very interesting.  Andrew Carnegie was a steel magnate and philanthropist.  "His legacy in Pittsburg as one of the richest men in America is a mixed bag.  His efforts to democratize art and education for the masses via libraries and museums rest uneasily alongside his role in low wages and poor conditions for his employees”,

The setting is in Pittsburg in 1863 and 19 year old Clara Keley has arrived from Galway, Ireland.  By a strange occurence, she assumes the identity of another Clara, who died on the voyage.  the new Clara becomes the ladies maid to Andrew Carnegie’s mother.  Romance blooms and the story unfolds making us aware of how Andrew Carnegie began to amass his fortune.

A very enjoyable read with lots of rich research that makes one understand better the workings of this brilliant businessman
