An American Marriage

This book grabbed me from the moment I started listening to it until the very end.  It is the story of Roy and Celestial, middle class educated black people.  They have been married for 13 months when Roy is unjustly accused and sentenced to prison.  In exquisite prose, the author tells us their story, their agony and their hopes for their marriage and the future.  Much of the narrative is told through letters between Roy and Celestial and some other family members and I must say that it was a powerful way to express thoughts and feelings and knowledge about the characters.

The review in the NY Times sums up beautifully, the essence of this novel.  I am so glad that I read it.
